Signal check

What changed—and what was not tested

Semax increased the tested GABA current and reduced the tested glycine current, with slowly developing effects. These isolated-cell effects do not identify a clinical effect on attention, sleep or anxiety.

The experimental design

Concentration-clamp experiments in isolated rat neurons.

Who or what was studied

Rat cerebellar Purkinje cells and hippocampal pyramidal neurons.

The measurement

GABA-activated and glycine-activated electrical currents. For a separate account of spontaneous glutamatergic currents and short-term synaptic-plasticity parameters, read Semax synapse research. For a separate account of spontaneous calcium fluctuations and proton-triggered calcium responses, read Semax calcium research.

The reported finding

Semax increased the tested GABA current and reduced the tested glycine current, with slowly developing effects. The direction changes with the system being measured. Calling the peptide broadly stimulating or calming would hide that distinction. The authors’ mechanistic interpretation is a hypothesis about cellular signaling, not a demonstrated effect on a person’s experience.

What the result cannot establish

These isolated-cell effects do not identify a clinical effect on attention, sleep or anxiety. A useful source question is which current, cell type and experimental condition support the explanation. Broad neurotransmitter language is not enough to determine what a clinical product will do. The consultation checklist can help you ask which part of this experimental result matches the preparation and goal under discussion.

A related comparison

The GABA-binding guide on this site concerns receptor-binding measurements. Binding and electrical-current experiments are complementary but should not be presented as the same replicated outcome.
